Maryam 19:84
فَلَا تَعْجَلْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا نَعُدُّ لَهُمْ عَدًّا
“So be not impatient over them. We only count out [i.e., allow] to them a [limited] number.[827]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Do not rush the end of those who do wrong: their time is already being counted, breath by breath, by the One who misses nothing.
A reflection
Every breath on a counted list
We are only counting for them a count. The speaker is Allah, and the verb is the plainest verb of all: to count.
The early authorities asked what exactly is being counted. One answer, given in a narration-based commentary, is years, months, days and hours. Another early report says: their breaths in this world, counted like their years and their life spans. A legal commentary gathers more answers still. Their steps. Their pleasures. Their glances. Their deeds.
Those answers are not competing. Together they describe a knowledge that misses nothing. The One counting is not estimating a lifespan from a chart. He is keeping the tally of each breath of each person who has ever drawn one.
Set the human ego beside that. Most of us speak of time as ours. My weekend, my career, my retirement, my plans for the next ten years. We budget hours as if we owned the supply. This ayah quietly removes the supply from our hands. The breaths are being counted by Someone else, and the last one is already on His list.
A sceptic may ask why a God beyond need would bother counting. The answer is in the word lahum, for them. The counting is done on their behalf and about them. It serves justice and mercy, not Allah's curiosity. He gains nothing from the tally. They are the ones who will meet it.
There is no arrogance in a person who knows their breaths are counted. There is not much room for it.
