Maryam 19:94
لَّقَدْ أَحْصَىٰهُمْ وَعَدَّهُمْ عَدًّا
“He has enumerated them and counted them a [full] counting.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The One to whom every creature comes as a servant has counted each of them, one by one, as a shepherd counts with pebbles.
A reflection
A multitude that does not distract Him
He has encompassed them in His count, and counted them precisely. The them is the whole of the previous ayah: everyone in the heavens and the earth.
A narration-based commentary spells it out. He has known their number from the moment He created them until the Day of Resurrection: male and female, young and old. A theological commentary widens it. They are all under His command, management, power and control. He surrounds them, and knows the whole of their affairs and every detail.
A legal commentary quotes an earlier theologian on the divine name that this verb suggests, the One who enumerates. What marks Him, the theologian said, is that multitude does not distract Him from knowing. Think of the rays of light, the gusts of the wind, the falling of leaves. He knows the parts of every movement in every single leaf. And how could He not, when He made them? The commentary quotes another surah: Does He not know, the One who created? He is the Subtle, the All-Aware (67:14).
Set that beside the human ego. We cannot keep track of the two hundred contacts in our phones. We forget names at weddings. Our attention is so narrow that we think of ourselves as busy when we are holding three things in mind.
The ayah does not shrink us to make a point. It simply tells the truth about scale. We are each one pebble in a count that has never lost a single one. That is humbling, and, for a lonely heart, it is also the most comforting sentence in the passage.
