Al-Baqarah 2:138

صِبْغَةَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ صِبْغَةً ۖ وَنَحْنُ لَهُۥ عَـٰبِدُونَ

“[And say, "Ours is] the religion of Allāh. And who is better than Allāh in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Ours is the dye of Allah, finer than any other, and it is Him alone that we worship.

A reflection

Who colours better than Allah?

At nineteen a football fan has his club's crest tattooed on his forearm. Ten years later the club redesigns its crest. His arm now carries a badge the club no longer uses.

People have always coloured themselves. Tribal colours, uniforms, flags, brands, badges. We dye ourselves with the loyalties of the moment, and the moment changes.

The ayah sets all of this beside one question. 'The dye of Allah. And who is better than Allah in dyeing?' The question is Allah's own, and it praises His work. A later commentary explains the comparison: no dye is finer than His.

What is Allah's dye? The commentators gather several answers. Most say it is His religion, Islam. One early authority said it is the natural disposition Allah created people with. Three concise commentaries join the two: His religion, the one that matches the nature He created people with. A lexicon goes further: it is the reason Allah placed in people, by which they differ from animals. Each answer points to something Allah made in us, not something we put on.

That is what shrinks the ego. We like to think of ourselves as self-made, self-designed, choosing our own colours. The ayah reminds us that the deepest colour in us was mixed by Another. Our best is to stop painting over it.

One lexicon on near-synonyms makes a subtle point. A ṣibgha is a form that implies a maker who made it. You cannot have a dye without a dyer.

Does Allah need us to admire His work? He is free of all need (35:15). But a person who knows whose colour he wears stops chasing every new badge. The club crest can change again. The dye of Allah does not wash out.
