Al-Baqarah 2:175
“Those are the ones who have exchanged guidance for error and forgiveness for punishment. How patient they are for [i.e., in pursuit of] the Fire!”

Essence
They traded guidance for error and forgiveness for punishment: two losing bargains, made with a boldness that astonishes.
A reflection
Two losing bargains in one sentence
A farmer sells his best field to pay off a car loan. Within five years the car is scrap. For the rest of his working life he rents worse land from the man who bought his field.
The ayah describes two such trades at once. They bought error with guidance, and punishment with forgiveness. A classical theologian explains why both are named. In this world, he says, the finest things are guidance and knowledge, and the worst are error and ignorance. In the next world the finest thing is forgiveness, and the worst is punishment. These people managed to lose the best of both worlds in a single deal.
The same theologian adds that they knew what they were doing. They knew the truth. They knew that bringing it out carried the greatest reward, and hiding it the greatest punishment. Hiding it anyway was knowingly selling forgiveness for punishment.
An early commentator notes the compression in the words. Allah mentions 'punishment' and 'forgiveness' instead of the deeds that lead to them. The listener understands: they took up what earns punishment and abandoned what earns forgiveness.
This is a strategic lesson as much as a moral one. Every trade has two columns. What do I get now, and what do I give up for later? The concealers looked only at the first column: gifts, status, a following. They never priced the second.
Good decisions price both. Before any deal with your conscience, ask the farmer's question in advance. What will I be renting, for the rest of my life, if I sell this?
