Al-Baqarah 2:176
“That is [deserved by them] because Allāh has sent down the Book in truth. And indeed, those who differ over the Book are in extreme dissension.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The Book came down with the truth; those who split it, taking some and leaving some, end up split apart and far from it.
A reflection
If the Book is clear, why all the disagreement?
A man stands trial for a theft. One prosecution witness places him in Leeds that night. Another says London. A third says he was never seen at all, but must have planned it. The jury notices that the accusers cannot agree on anything except that he is guilty.
A sceptic might turn this ayah into a challenge. If Allah sent down the Book 'with the truth', why do people disagree about it so much? Surely a clear book would produce agreement.
The commentators answer by looking at who disagreed, and how. Several modern and classical commentaries say the dispute meant believing part of the Book and rejecting part. The text was not unclear. The readers were selective. A later commentator says the Book has no trace of falsehood in it at all. They rejected it by denial or by concealment.
Others apply the ayah to the Quran's opponents in Makkah. One said it was magic, another poetry, another soothsaying, another the tales of the ancients. Like the witnesses in the trial, they could agree only that it must be false. That disagreement told against the accusers, not the accused.
What remains open is the honest disagreement among believers who accept the whole Book and differ over its meaning. That is a different thing. Scholars have always differed in understanding while holding to all of it. The ayah targets something else: picking and choosing, then hiding the parts that are inconvenient.
The test for any of us is simple. Do I accept the Book, and then try to understand it? Or do I decide first, and then select the verses that agree with me?
