Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 271 of 286
Al-Baqarah 2:271
“If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allāh, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.”

Essence
Open charity is good, but giving secretly to the poor is better and covers your faults; the One who knows every inner state sees it.
A reflection
The box marked 'anonymous', and the group chat
A man donates online and ticks the box marked 'anonymous'. That evening, in the family group chat, he mentions that he 'did his bit' for the appeal, with a figure. The box was ticked. The heart was not.
The ayah ends, 'And Allah is Khabīr of what you do'. The root of khabīr is knowledge of a thing's inner reality, reached as if by testing it. The Arabs set a person's makhbar, what he proves to be when tried, against his manẓar, how he looks. A concise commentary explains: He knows its inner side as He knows its outer.
That name is the right ending for an ayah about hidden giving. Secret charity is not only a matter of who sees. It is a matter of who you are giving for. One can give secretly and still crave credit. One can give openly with a clean heart. Only the One who knows the makhbar can tell them apart.
The Prophet ﷺ described seven whom Allah shades on the Day when there is no shade but His. One is a man who gave charity so secretly that his left hand did not know what his right hand spent (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
This is where the ego shrinks. We want our goodness noticed. The ayah does not shame that wish; it redirects it. You are noticed, completely, by the One whose notice matters.
Someone may ask whether a God who sees all secrets is intrusive. But He gains nothing from watching; He is free of all need (35:15). His knowing frees the sincere from performing.
The man could have left the group chat alone. The anonymous box only works if the hand stays quiet too.
