Al-Baqarah 2:283

“And if you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit [should be] taken. And if one of you entrusts another, then let him who is entrusted discharge his trust [faithfully] and let him fear Allāh, his Lord. And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allāh is Knowing of what you do.”

Essence

Without a scribe, a pledge will do; where people trust each other, the trusted must deliver in full; and no witness may hide the truth.

A reflection

The man who was looking the other way

After a worker falls from a ladder in a warehouse, an inquiry asks the staff what they saw. One man watched the manager remove the safety rail that morning. He says he was looking the other way. He tells himself he stayed neutral.

'Do not conceal testimony. Whoever conceals it, his heart is sinful. And Allah knows what you do'. The lexicons give the root of concealing a quiet picture. A she-camel that makes no sound when mounted. A rain cloud that gives no thunder. The concealer holds back what he could have said.

Why does the ayah single out the heart? A concise commentary explains. The heart is where testimony is held. And when the heart sins, the rest of the person follows it. A modern commentary calls such a heart treacherous.

This is where the ego's favourite hiding place is exposed. We imagine silence is neutral. I did not lie, we say. I just did not get involved. The ayah refuses that comfort. When you know the truth and someone needs it, silence is not neutral. It is a choice, and it is made in the heart.

Then the closing name: Allah knows what you do. The man in the warehouse can tell himself any story he likes. The One who knows what the heart holds knows what it withheld.

Is this a God demanding to be acknowledged? No. He gains nothing from our testimony; He is free of all need (35:15). The command protects the person who needs the truth, and the witness's own heart from rotting around a secret.

The injured worker lost his case. The silent man lost something harder to see.
