Al-Baqarah 2:284
“To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allāh will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allāh is over all things competent.”

Essence
All in the heavens and earth is Allah's, and so is what lies within you; shown or hidden, He reckons it, forgiving whom He wills.
A reflection
The diary with the tiny lock
A teenage girl keeps a diary with a tiny brass lock, and hides the key inside a shoe. Whatever happens in the house, she tells herself, this one place is hers alone.
The ayah opens wide. 'To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth'. Then it turns, using the very same words, mā fī, 'whatever is in', to point inward. 'Whether you show what is in yourselves or hide it, Allah will call you to account for it'.
The phrasing is deliberate. The galaxies are 'what is in the heavens'. The secret resentment is 'what is in yourselves'. Both are held by the same Owner. A classical commentator says nothing is hidden from Him: not the outward, not the secret, not the innermost, however fine and concealed.
That is where our ego's last refuge is opened. We are used to sharing our outward lives with God: prayers, charity, visible good deeds. But we often treat the inner world as private property. Our grudges, envies and fantasies feel like ours alone. The ayah gently declares that there is no locked room He does not own.
Someone may ask whether a God who claims even our inner world is controlling. But consider the next words: 'He forgives whom He wills'. The One who sees the whole inner landscape is the only one who can heal it. He gains nothing from watching. He is free of all need (35:15).
The girl's diary lock was never really for her parents. It was for her own sense of having somewhere safe. The ayah offers a deeper safety: being completely known, and still invited to be forgiven.
