Al-Baqarah 2:5

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

“Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who live this way are carried now by guidance from their Lord, and in the end they reach what they hoped for.

A reflection

Riding the wave, not fighting it

Watch a beginner surfer for an hour. He paddles, the wave passes under him, and he is left bobbing in its wake. He paddles again, stands too early and is thrown. Then, once, it happens. He catches the wave at the right moment and stands up, and suddenly he is not fighting the sea. He is on it, and it is carrying him.

The ayah says the believers are ʿalā hudan: literally 'on' guidance. Two classical commentaries explain the preposition with a picture. It is how you describe someone who has mounted a thing and is riding it, settled and in control. The Arabs spoke the same way of wrongdoing. A man 'made error his mount', 'rode ignorance', or 'sat on the withers of desire'. Everyone is riding something. The question is what.

So guidance here is not a signpost you glance at as you pass. It is something you sit on, which carries you. The God-conscious of the previous ayat still make effort: they pray, give, believe and hold themselves to account. But at some point the effort changes character. They are no longer dragging themselves towards the good. The good is bearing them along.

And the word is indefinite: hudan, 'a guidance', with no 'the'. The same commentaries hear this as a guidance so great that its measure cannot be reached. It is like saying of an impressive person: had you seen him, you would have seen a man. The size is left open on purpose.

It comes min rabbihim, from their Lord. They did not manufacture it. One explanation calls it the help and success that Allah grants, which strengthened them for good deeds and lifted them from good to better. The surfer did not make the wave. His skill was only in placing himself where it could lift him.

If you feel that faith is all paddling and no lift, you are not alone. Keep paddling towards the place where the waves break. The prayer, the charity, the careful choices of the last two ayat are how you get there. The carrying is His.
