Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 6 of 286
Al-Baqarah 2:6
“Indeed, those who disbelieve[11] - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.”

Essence
For those who have settled on covering the truth, a warning and silence land the same; the messenger's task is to deliver, not to force.
A reflection
Same for them, not for you
At two in the morning, a volunteer stands at a table in a motorway service station. She offers free coffee to drivers and a small card about the danger of driving tired. Most take the coffee and leave the card. A few laugh. Now and then someone reads it, sits down and sleeps in the car park for an hour. She never learns who. She is back the next weekend.
This ayah was revealed to a messenger who cared intensely. An early report explains that the Prophet ﷺ longed for all people to believe and follow the guidance. So Allah told him that some would not, however they were warned. One commentary gathers the ayat that frame this. Do not let yourself be consumed with grief over them (35:8). Your duty is only to convey, and the reckoning is Ours (13:40). You are only a warner (11:12).
Notice the small words ʿalayhim, 'for them'. Warning or not warning is the same for them. It is not the same for the one who warns. The commentary spells this out: deliver the message, and whoever responds has the fullest share of good. Do not let those who turn away drain your strength.
This is one of the hardest lessons of leadership. A parent, a teacher, a manager or an imam who takes responsibility for other people's choices will burn out. You can control whether you speak clearly, kindly and in time. You cannot control whether someone listens. The Prophet ﷺ, the best of warners, was told to accept that line.
That does not mean giving up on anyone. The same Quran says that Allah may yet put affection between you and those you now count as enemies (60:7). It means placing the outcome where it belongs. Your warning is recorded as done, whatever the listener does with it.
So the volunteer does her job and goes home. The card was offered. The rest was never in her hands.
