Al-Baqarah 2:72

وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَٱدَّٰرَْٰٔتُمْ فِيهَا ۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ

“And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed[30] over it, but Allāh was to bring out that which you were concealing.”

Essence

A man was killed and each side pushed the blame onto the other, but Allah was always going to bring out what they hid.

A reflection

Brought out, as if already done

A man buries a stolen strongbox under his garden shed. He lives in the house for forty years and tells no one. A year after he dies, the new owners dig foundations for an extension.

'And Allah was bringing out what you were hiding.' The word is mukhrij, one who brings out. Its root pictures something coming out of where it was held: a shoot from the soil, a child from the womb. A classical theologian notes the form. It is a participle, as though the exposure were already happening, even while they were still arguing. The outcome was certain before they had finished hiding.

The same commentator draws the plain conclusion. Allah could only bring out what they concealed because He already knew all of it. Nothing they buried was ever hidden from Him; it was only hidden from each other.

This is a humbling ayah for the ego. Every concealed wrong rests on a quiet arrogance: the belief that my cleverness can outlast the truth. In the reports, the killer was confident enough to leave the body at another clan's door. He let innocent people carry his crime. He watched the community edge towards fighting, and stayed silent.

Allah needed no detective. He commanded a cow, and the hidden came out.

For a reader, the ayah cuts two ways. It is a warning to anyone holding a buried wrong: confess it to Allah and repair it while you still can. And it is a comfort to anyone wrongly blamed. The One who knows what was hidden is not unaware of what was done to you.
