At-Tariq 86:9

يَوْمَ تُبْلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ

“The Day when secrets will be put on trial,[1902]”

Saheeh International

Essence

One day the hidden side of every life is turned out and examined, and the self you kept private becomes the self that counts.

A reflection

Worn thin until the fabric shows

Tublā comes from a root the Arabs first used for clothes. A garment baliya when daily wear made it thin, until you could see what it was made of. A camel worn lean by long journeys was described with the same word. To test someone was pictured this way: to try him so often that what he is made of shows through.

Al-sarāʾir are secrets, and that root holds a surprise. The sirr of a valley was its best, most fertile ground. The same letters give surūr, gladness free of grief. What you hide and what you truly are live at the same depth.

One lexicon, under this root, quotes a line mocking some horsemen who camped in the best part of a valley. They have a look, it says, and nothing behind it. The ayah is about the day when the look no longer counts.

In this world we are judged by the outside, and rightly so. Sahih al-Bukhari reports that the Prophet ﷺ refused to have a known hypocrite killed, so that people would not say Muhammad kills his companions. The outward was accepted here. One classical reflection draws the contrast. In this life, what shows on a person is his deed. On that Day it is his secret, and the secret is what counts.

Picture a second-hand car on a forecourt, polished until it gleams. The buyer loves it. At its first annual test the mechanic raises it on the ramp, shines a torch underneath and goes quiet. The body was fine. The chassis was rust.

Most of us live with some gap between the polish and the underneath: the curated version of us, and the unedited one. The ayah does not shame that gap. It simply tells you it will close, and that the underneath is what will be read. The wise start closing it now, from the inside, while the work can still be done.
