Taha 20:126

قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ أَتَتْكَ ءَايَـٰتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا ۖ وَكَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ تُنسَىٰ

“[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The signs came and you treated them as forgotten; so today you are treated as forgotten: not a memory lapse, but a choice returned.

A reflection

Signs that came running to you

Atatka āyātunā: Our signs came to you. The verb has a gentle picture in its root. The lexicons say ityān is coming with ease. The Arabs called a torrent running on its course atiyy, and the channel that carries water to the pool the same.

And āya, sign, has its own scene. One lexicon traces it to stopping and looking. A poet says: stand at the ruined dwellings like a visitor, and pause and look. The āya of an abandoned camp was what time had left of it: the hearthstones and the ash. The Quran's āya is pictured as a waymark set up on a road: when one has passed, the next comes into view.

So the ayah says something striking. The man did not have to hunt for the signs. They came to him, like water flowing along a channel into his own pool. One commentary describes them as proofs of His oneness and power. All he had to do was stop and look.

Picture a family living room with a beautiful gilt-edged Quran on the top shelf. It was a wedding present. It is dusted every Friday. It comes down at a death, or in Ramadan when a guest asks. The rest of the year it sits there, closed, a waymark everyone walks past on the way to the television.

The signs have come. They are in the house, on the phone, in the sky over the car park, in the face of a newborn. What is missing is the visitor's pause.

The answer to this man is not 'you never had the chance'. It is 'they came to you, and you forgot them'. One commentary explains that forgetting: you left them, did not look into them, and turned from them.

So the remedy is not finding new signs. It is stopping at the ones already flowing into your life. Take the Quran down from the shelf this week. Pause, and look.
