Essence
Before you ever remembered Him, He had already remembered you; this ayah asks you to answer, and promises to answer back.
A reflection
Who remembered first
Most of us carry this ayah as a fair deal. You remember Allah, and He keeps you in mind. It can sound like a loyalty scheme: put in your points, collect your reward.
Look at the first letter. Fa-dhkurūnī: so remember Me. 'So' answers something. The ayah before it lists what had already been given. A messenger from among you, reciting, purifying, teaching what you could never have known (2:151). One early reading puts it plainly: as I have done, so remember Me. Another hears it as: as I remembered you by sending the Messenger, now remember Me.
So the remembering did not start with you. You are not opening an account. You are answering a letter.
The grammar does make a promise. 'I will remember you' is shaped as the answer to the command, the way a reward answers a deed. And one of the Companions said the second half outweighs the first: Allah's remembering you is greater than your remembering Him.
Now feel the size of that. We spend our lives wanting to be mentioned. We refresh to see who tagged us. We replay the meeting to check whether our name came up. Pride, under its many disguises, is mostly this hunger to be noticed.
In a hadith qudsi, Allah says: whoever remembers Me in himself, I remember him in Myself. Whoever remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). A gathering better than any you will ever enter, and your name spoken in it.
Does He need our remembering? No. He is free of all need (35:15). The command is built so that the gain comes back to us. The ego that has spent years chasing mention can finally rest. The only mention worth having has already been offered.
