Taha 20:29

وَٱجْعَل لِّى وَزِيرًا مِّنْ أَهْلِى

“And appoint for me a minister [i.e., assistant] from my family -”

Saheeh International

Essence

A wazīr was first a load-carrier and a mountain to shelter in; Musa asked for both, and he asked for them from home.

A reflection

A load on the back, a mountain to run to

Today the word wazīr sounds like an office: a minister with a car, a title and a door with his name on it. The first hearers pictured something heavier and more physical.

The lexicons describe a traveller spreading his cloak on the ground, piling his goods into it and heaving the bundle onto his back. That bundle is a wizr, a load. The same word came to mean a sin, because a sin weighs a person down. A wazīr, on this picture, is the one who takes part of the load onto his own back.

The root has a second picture. Wazar is a steep mountain where people take refuge. One commentary quotes a line of verse that uses it. From the fiercest wild beasts there is a mountain refuge, but from the harm of people there is none. On this second reading, the wazīr is the one the leader turns to, a place of shelter for his judgement. The lexicons and the commentaries keep both images, and both fit Musa's request.

So Musa was not asking for a deputy with a title. He was asking for two things at once. Someone to carry part of a weight that was too heavy for one back. And someone to turn to when the pressure came, the way a man in danger runs for the high ground.

Think of a stage manager on the opening night of a long play. The lead actor gets the applause. But the stage manager has carried the cues, the cables, the late understudy and the broken prop. When the lead panics in the interval, it is the stage manager's calm voice he looks for. Load-carrier and refuge, in one person.

That is the dignity hidden in the word. The wazīr is not the one who stands beside the throne to be seen. He is the one whose back is bent under part of the burden, and whose steadiness others shelter behind.
