As-Saf 61:14
“O you who have believed, be supporters of Allāh, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allāh?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allāh." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant.”

Essence
Isa asked who would support him towards Allah, and the disciples answered instantly and completely, a model this surah's closing line asks every believer to match.
A reflection
Named for being washed clean
Ḥawāriyyūn grows from a root the lexicons trace through three connected senses: turning back, as a turban is unwound; turning, as a pulley wheel turns on its axle; and whiteness, as cloth is washed clean. Fullers who washed and whitened cloth for a living were called ḥawwārū, and the finest, whitest flour was ḥuwwārā. One account of how Isa's closest followers came by this name ties it to exactly this trade: men who laundered cloth until it came out pure white, their own name carrying the cleanness of their craft into what they became known for afterwards.
Whatever their original occupation, the name settled on something larger than a trade once it attached to them: these were the first to believe, the inner circle closest to Isa, marked out by a word meaning purity and clarity rather than status or wealth. A ḥawāriyy is not simply a follower among many. The word itself carries the sense of something washed clean of the ordinary dirt that clings to half-hearted or self-interested support.
That naming matters for how their answer should be read a moment later. When Isa asks who will support him, the question is put to people already known, by the very word used for them, as the washed-clean ones, support offered without the usual stains of self-interest mixed into it.
