Taha 20:68

قُلْنَا لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

“We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Into a fear no one else could see, Allah speaks: do not fear, you are the uppermost, with height lent by the Most High.

A reflection

Height lent by the Most High

At a crowded parade, a small girl cannot see anything but backs and coats. Her father lifts her onto his shoulders. Suddenly she is the tallest person in the street. She waves at the bands as if she owned the view. Her height is real. It is also entirely borrowed.

Allah says to Musa: innaka anta al-aʿlā, it is you who are the uppermost. The word aʿlā comes from a root pictured as a mountain's summit, and above it the sky. And al-Aʿlā, the Most High, is how the Quran describes Allah Himself. Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High (87:1).

So here is a striking exchange. The One who is truly Most High lends that word, for one afternoon, to a frightened man with a staff. Musa's height over the magicians and over Pharaoh was real. It was also lifted onto him from above.

That is the shape of majesty in this ayah, and it shrinks the ego in a gentle way. Every bit of height any human being ever has is borrowed. The successful founder, the respected scholar, the parent whose children look up to them. Each is standing on shoulders they did not build.

Pride forgets that. It waves at the crowd as if the view were its own. Humility remembers whose shoulders it is sitting on.

A sceptic might ask why Allah speaks of Himself as "We" and announces who will be uppermost. Does He need to display His power? But look at who this sentence is for. It is said to a man who was afraid. Allah's power, here, is not a boast. It is the best news a frightened person can hear.

When you are lifted, remember who is holding you. When you are afraid, remember who can lift you.
