Al-Hajj 22:21
وَلَهُم مَّقَـٰمِعُ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ
“And for [striking] them are maces of iron.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After garments of fire and scalding water comes one more thing said to be theirs: rods of iron that beat back what will not yield.
A reflection
Heads that would not bow
A new graduate starts at an accounting firm. On his first Friday he finds the small prayer room by the lifts. A colleague walks past the open door. He stands on the mat for a long moment before he lets his forehead touch the carpet.
That hesitation is about the head. The head is where we keep our dignity. It is the last part of us we are willing to lower.
Read this ayah with the ones just before it, and the head runs through the whole passage. Three ayat earlier the surah asks a question. Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and on the earth? The sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees and the animals all bow. Then the line divides us: and many of mankind, and many upon whom the punishment is due (22:18).
Next come the two disputants, and the fate of those who refused. Scalding water is poured from above their heads (22:19). And here: for them are rods of iron. The concise commentaries say what the rods are for. They are for striking their heads.
One linguist quoted in the commentaries explains the verb behind the word. To qamaʿa someone's head was to strike it hard. The word itself carries the picture of a head forced down.
The passage does not set this out as a simple sum. But the pattern is hard to miss. One early commentator says even the shadows of things prostrate as they lengthen and turn. The one creature given a choice refused. The head that would not go down by consent meets a rod made to bring it down.
So the hesitation in the prayer room is worth winning. Lower the head here, freely, a few times a day. It is the cheapest dignity there is, and the only kind that lasts.
