Al-Hajj 22:23

“Indeed, Allāh will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments therein will be silk.”

Essence

Against garments cut from fire, Allah Himself admits the believers into gardens of rivers, gold and pearl on their wrists, silk their clothing.

A reflection

Rivers from below, where fire was poured from above

Read 22:19 to 22:23 as one page, and a mirror appears. Almost every detail given to one side of the dispute has a twin on the other.

For the deniers, garments were cut from fire. One linguistic commentary pictures fires measured to the size of each body, wrapping it as a tailored garment wraps the wearer. For the believers, their clothing is silk. A narration-based commentary makes the pairing explicit: this silk stands opposite the garments cut for the people of the Fire.

For the deniers, scalding water is poured from above their heads (22:19). For the believers, rivers flow from beneath. One brings heat down on a person. The other brings coolness up around him.

The deniers' hands meet rods of iron (22:21). The believers' wrists receive bracelets of gold and pearl. Where one body was melted inside and out (22:20), the other is adorned.

One theologian lists four gifts here: the dwelling, the adornment, the clothing, and, in the next ayah, the good word. Each answers something in the passage before it.

Why build it as a mirror? Because a pair is easier to ponder than a single image. Fire alone frightens. A garden alone pleases. Set side by side, they become a choice. The reader sees the same wrist, the same head, the same skin, and two endings for it.

This is also a way to read the whole Quran. When a verse describes reward, look nearby for its twin, and the reverse. The meaning often sits in the gap between them. Here the gap is the difference between what is poured on a person and what flows beneath him.

It is worth asking which of the two we are building towards each day. Not in theory. In the small things our hands, heads and skin are doing now.
