Al-Hajj 22:24
وَهُدُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلطَّيِّبِ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ وَهُدُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ
“And they had been guided [in worldly life] to good speech, and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The believers were guided to the good among words and to the path of the One who is praised, whether or not anyone praises Him.
A reflection
A road that carries only His name
A businessman pays to resurface the lane that runs through his village. It is generous, and the potholes were dangerous. Then he asks the council for a sign at both ends of the lane, bearing his name. The villagers still use the road. They also roll their eyes at the sign.
We like our names on paths. It is one of the ego's oldest habits. A bench, a wing, a scholarship, a lane: if we laid it, we want it known.
This ayah ends with a path named after its Owner. Ṣirāṭ al-Ḥamīd: the path of the Praiseworthy. One narration-based commentary explains the form of the word. Ḥamīd is shaped from maḥmūd, praised. He is the One praised by those who know Him. A later commentary goes further. He is the One who deserves the utmost praise in Himself.
That last point is the heart of it. A human name on a sign asks for praise. Allah's name on this path does not ask; it states. His being Praiseworthy does not depend on our praise, any more than the sun depends on being noticed.
Why then does He tell us? Not because He needs to hear it. Whoever is grateful is grateful for his own good. And whoever is ungrateful, my Lord is Free of need, Generous (27:40). He names Himself so that we know whose path we are on, and walk it with the right posture.
That posture is humility. On this road no name is on the sign but His. The scholar, the donor, the activist and the new Muslim all walk a path they did not lay. Each was guided to it, a verb in the passive. None of us built the way. We were brought to it.
So whatever good you do on the path, leave the sign blank. The road already has a name.
