Al-Hajj 22:33

“For you therein [i.e., the animals marked for sacrifice] are benefits for a specified term;[926] then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House.[927]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The animals marked for the House serve you on the road until their named moment; then their journey rests at the Ancient House.

A reflection

Every gift you hold carries a named date

A music conservatory lends a first-year student a fine old violin. Inside the case, on a small brass plate, is a date. She may play it every day, take it to concerts, let it change her sound. On that date it goes back.

The ayah speaks of the camels and cattle led towards Makkah as offerings. For you in them are benefits, it says, until a named term. The commentaries list the benefits plainly: milk, wool, hair, young, and a back to ride. Then comes the ajal musammā, the term already named.

The early commentators differ on what that term is. One view, reported from a Companion and several of his students, makes it the moment the owner declares the animal an offering. From then on, its ordinary uses stop. Another view lets limited benefits continue until the sacrifice itself. A theologian among the commentators weighs both and leans to the second.

Every view shares one picture. The benefit is real, and it has an edge. It is given for a while, and the while is named in advance.

That picture fits far more than camels. Your eyesight is a benefit until a named term. So is your strength, your voice, your parents' presence, and the hours of this morning. The root of manāfiʿ simply means whatever helps you reach good, the plain opposite of harm. Nothing in the ayah frowns on use. Drink the milk; ride the back. But the date is on the brass plate.

The student who knows the return date plays differently. She does not hoard the violin in its case, afraid of a scratch. Nor does she treat it as hers to sell. She plays it fully, and she remembers whose it is.

Ask what you are holding this year with a date on it. Then use it well, and hold it lightly.
