Al-Mu'minun 23:12

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن سُلَـٰلَةٍ مِّن طِينٍ

“And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.”

Essence

Straight after the garden that lasts for ever, the surah reminds its heirs where they came from: a small, chosen extract drawn out of clay.

A reflection

A word shaped like nail clippings

The ayah opens with an oath-like emphasis, wa-laqad, and indeed, and then a verb in the first person of majesty: khalaqnā, We created. Whatever follows is said by the One who made everything, about the one creature most inclined to forget that it was made.

Then comes the word sulāla. Two classical commentators point out its pattern. Words built on the shape fuʿāla often name a small amount left over from an action: qulāma, nail clippings; qumāma, sweepings. Another commentator adds a gentle correction. The same pattern also names the intended product of an action, like khulāṣa, the extract one was trying to obtain. Sulāla is of that second kind. It is a small thing, but a chosen one.

Picture an architect at the opening of the tower she designed. Forty storeys of glass, her name on the brass plaque, a ribbon to cut. Before the speeches, the site foreman hands her a small jam jar of grey clay. It is from the first hole they dug, he says, for luck. She holds it for a long moment. Everything above her head stands on what is in that jar.

That is the posture this ayah invites. Human pride rarely remembers the jar. It remembers the tower, the plaque, the applause. The ayah sets the whole human race, with its achievements and its arrogance, back on a small extract of clay drawn out by Allah.

This is not meant to humiliate. The same surah has just promised these creatures of clay the highest garden there is. It is meant to keep the ego in its true size, so that the gift of Firdaws is received as a gift, by people who know how small they began.
