Al-Mu'minun 23:13

ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ نُطْفَةً فِى قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ

“Then We placed him as a sperm-drop[949] in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb].”

Essence

Every human life is placed first as a tiny drop in a resting place made secure for it: cool, settled and guarded before anyone knew it was there.

A reflection

The last mouthful at the bottom of the bucket

Thumma jaʿalnāhu nuṭfatan: then We made him a drop. The speaker is Allah, and the one being made is every human being who has ever stood up in pride.

The word nuṭfa is humbler than any translation lets on. The lexicons say plainly that it meant a little clear water: what is left in the bottom of a waterskin or a bucket. A night of rain dripping until dawn was called by the same root. The human fluid is named nuṭfa, they explain, because of how little it is. This is the established sense of the word.

Picture a celebrated surgeon, a woman whose hands are booked for months ahead. Her daughter shows her an early pregnancy scan on a phone screen. There, in a grey field, is a flicker the size of a grain of rice. The surgeon, who has held beating hearts, finds she has to sit down. Everything she is, every skill and every award, began as something smaller than this.

Pride depends on forgetting that grain of rice. It needs the story to begin with a degree, a title or a bank balance. The ayah begins the story where it actually begins, with a few drops that no one would look at twice, placed where no one could see them.

This is not contempt. It is accuracy. The same Lord who made the drop made it into the person reading this sentence. To remember the drop is not to despise oneself. It is to know who did the making, and to stand before Him with the right sense of size.
