Al-Furqan 25:11
بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِمَن كَذَّبَ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ سَعِيرًا
“But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Their objections were never the real reason: under them lay a refusal to face the Hour, and a Fire already stands ready for that refusal.
A reflection
The objection underneath the objections
Read the ayat just before this one and you hear a list. Why does this messenger eat food? Why does he walk in the markets? Why has no angel come down with him? Why has he no treasure, no garden to eat from (25:7-8)?
The Quran takes the list seriously. It answers: if Allah willed, He would give you better than that, gardens with rivers and palaces (25:10). Later it answers again: every messenger before you ate food and walked in the markets (25:20).
Then comes one small word: bal. Rather. It is the word that moves from the stated reason to the real one. They have denied the Hour.
One classical reading puts the diagnosis sharply. They found the preparation for that Day heavy, so they rejected the one who reminded them of it. Another says they would not carry the cost of thinking, so no proof could reach them. A third notes that once the Hour was gone, their eyes were fixed on worldly shares. They decided honour meant money, so his empty hands became their excuse.
Most of us have watched this from the inside. A man stops returning his brother's calls. The signal is bad. There is the time difference. He is driving. Each reason is true, and none is the reason. The reason is a sum of money he borrowed four years ago and cannot face.
Answer every one of his excuses and he will find another. The excuses are not holding the position. Something underneath is.
The ayah teaches a question worth turning on yourself. Suppose you keep finding fault with some good thing: a reminder, a class, a duty, a person. Ask what would have to change if it were true. If the answer is a great deal, the objections may be guarding that.
The denial of the Hour is rarely argued from evidence. More often it is a relief. If there is no Day, there is nothing to prepare for. That relief is exactly what the word bal uncovers.
