Al-Furqan 25:56
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا
“And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The Messenger was sent to bring good news and to warn, not to force hearts or grieve himself over those who refuse.
A reflection
A job description with one word that frees you
Wa mā arsalnāka illā: We did not send you except. Arabic uses this shape, a 'not' followed by an 'except', to draw a firm boundary. Everything outside the boundary is excluded.
What is excluded here? One commentator says it outright. We did not send you as a guardian over them, nor as a controller. Another draws the emotional consequence. We sent you only to bring good news to the believers and to warn the deniers. So do not grieve over their refusal to believe.
Picture a hospital chaplain sitting with a dying man. He has asked, again and again, for his two estranged sons. The chaplain finds their numbers. She rings each of them. She tells them plainly that their father is asking for them, and that there may be very little time. One says he will think about it. The other hangs up.
She cannot drive to their houses and carry them to the ward. That is not her role. Her role was to carry the message clearly, kindly and in time. She did it. Whatever they decide, she can sit with the father tonight with a clear conscience.
The Prophet ﷺ cared so much about his people that the Quran repeatedly consoled him. This ayah is part of that consolation. It is not a reduction of his mission. It is a release from a weight that was never his: the weight of other people's choices.
There is a leadership lesson in that boundary. Many leaders burn out because they take responsibility for outcomes they do not control. Parents, teachers, managers, imams. Know exactly what you were sent to do. Do it fully. Then leave hearts to the One who turns them.
The word illā, 'only', is not a limit on your love. It is the line that keeps your love from destroying you.
