Al-Furqan 25:6

“Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful."”

Essence

Answering the charge that the Quran was copied, Allah names Himself as the One who knows every secret, then leaves forgiveness open to the accusers.

A reflection

The answer to a smear is a Name

The accusation in the previous ayah was detailed and confident. Old stories, copied out, read to him morning and evening. A reply in kind would argue about dates, tutors and manuscripts. The ayah does something else. It names the Author.

Say: it was sent down by the One who knows the secret in the heavens and the earth.

That reply shrinks two egos at once. The first is the accuser's. He thinks the contest is between his story and the Prophet's ﷺ. But the secret Allah knows includes his own. The commentators draw this out. He knows what you hide of your plotting, and He knows that you know your charge is false. The slanderer's private certainty that he is lying is itself on record.

Picture a contractor who posts on a trade forum under a false name. A rival's welds are failing, he writes. He knows every one of them passed inspection. He refreshes the page for replies, feeling clever and unseen. The one real fact in the scene is the one he forgot. The One who knows why he typed it is watching.

The second ego is ours. We like to win arguments and to have the last word. The ayah gives the Prophet ﷺ no clever retort. It points away from him entirely, to the One who sent the Book.

Does Allah need this praise of His knowledge? He needs nothing from anyone. He names it for their sake, not His. Once the Knower is named, the slander shrinks to its true size, and so does our fear of being slandered. Arrogance would demand to be admired. This simply tells the frightened and the lying where they stand.
