أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنْعَـٰمٍ وَبَنِينَ

“Provided you with grazing livestock and children”

Saheeh International

Essence

Hud names the two things 'Ad counted as their strength, the herd and the sons, and files both under the One who supplied them.

A reflection

The herd and the heirs, in His column

Hud begins his list with two items. Livestock, then sons. The choice is not random.

One grammarian, quoted in a linguistic commentary, explains the order. Livestock come first because through them come leadership, strength against an enemy, and wealth. They were the property the Arabs loved most. Sons come next, because they help guard the herds and tend them. Another commentary gives the same reason for pairing them. The sons are the hands that keep the flock.

So Hud names exactly what a man of 'Ad would point to when asked what made him strong. Look at my herds. Look at my boys.

Picture a sheep farmer at the auction mart. His two sons are working the pens, moving ewes through the gates with practised hands. A buyer admires the flock. The farmer says it is all his own doing, forty years of it. He means it kindly. He has simply forgotten every lambing night when a ewe lived that should have died. He has forgotten that his sons were given, not manufactured.

The verb sweeps all of that into one column. Amaddakum: He supplied you. The herd and the heirs are listed under Allah's giving, not under the owner's achievements.

This is where pride is cut down to size. Not because the farmer did nothing. He worked hard and well. But the life in every lamb, and the breath in every son, were never his to make.

Why would Allah have His gifts listed like this? Not to collect a debt. One theological commentary says the list was meant to wake them from heedlessness. A gift you have forgotten cannot make you grateful. Naming it gives you back the chance.

So stand at your own pens for a moment. Count what you would point to as your strength. Then move each item into its true column.
