Ash-Shu'ara 26:19

وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ ٱلَّتِى فَعَلْتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

“And [then] you did your deed which you did,[1046] and you were of the ungrateful."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Pharaoh names no deed, only 'the deed you did', and seals it with a label: old weapons against a messenger he cannot answer.

A reflection

Accused of covering, by the one who covered most

Pharaoh closes his charge with a verdict: wa anta mina al-kāfirīn. Most commentators read it here as 'one of the ungrateful'. Musa had eaten his bread, and this, says Pharaoh, is how he repaid it.

The root carries a picture the first hearers knew from the fields. The lexicons describe a farmer pressing earth over seed until it disappears from sight. The night is called kāfir because it covers everything. To 'cover' a favour is to bury it, to act as if it had never been given. Ingratitude, in this language, is not a feeling. It is an act of concealment.

Now look at who is holding the spade. Pharaoh accuses a man of burying one favour. He himself stood on the largest buried favour in the room. His life, his health, his river, his kingdom: all were given. He had covered the Giver so completely that he called himself lord. One early report says Pharaoh had no notion of disbelief in a Lord at all. The only ingratitude he could imagine was ingratitude to himself.

That is how covering works. A man scrubs his first boss's name from every telling of his success. Over the years he says 'I built this' so often that he believes it. He never thinks of himself as ungrateful. Yet ask him who has failed to say thank you, and he will name the junior who left last spring.

The loudest accusers of ingratitude are often those who have buried the most. It is easier to see earth on someone else's seed.

So before calling anyone ungrateful, try the word on yourself. Which gifts in my life have I pressed out of sight? Allah, who owes no one anything, has given everything. He is the One most covered over, every day, by people who complain that nobody thanks them.
