Ash-Shu'ara 26:202
فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
“And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The end they were warned about for years arrives all at once, and finds them busy with life, feeling nothing coming.
A reflection
The startle lives in the unready mind
Baghta is a plain word with a sharp edge. The lexicons give it one meaning: a thing meeting you from where you were not reckoning on it. It is the startle itself.
One lexicon illustrates it with a frontier town. Its people are never safe from the enemy arriving unannounced. Another records a related word for a man so taken aback that he cannot see his way. An old saying adds that there is no sound judgement from a man in that state.
So the shock of baghta is not only in the event. It is in the mind that has nothing ready.
Picture the doors of a hospital's emergency department at three in the morning. An ambulance pulls in without warning. A visitor waiting in the corridor freezes, then backs against the wall. A nurse on the night shift is already moving. She does not know what is on the stretcher. But she knew something would come, so her hands know what to do.
The same arrival meets two different minds. For one it is chaos. For the other it is the work she was ready for.
The ayah describes the deniers meeting their end like the visitor. They had been told it was coming. They had not prepared one thought for it.
The believer is not asked to live in fear of the sudden. Fear freezes, just as the lexicon's stunned man cannot see his way. The believer is asked to live ready. Prayers kept. Wrongs repaired. Words with Allah never long unspoken. Then whatever arrives, at whatever hour, meets someone who knew it could.
