Ash-Shu'ara 26:201
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ
“They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Their denial has an end date, but the wrong one: they will believe only when they see the painful punishment, when believing no longer helps.
A reflection
Belief that arrives with the evidence is too late
The ayah does not say they will never believe. It says they will not believe until they see. In the end, they will believe. That is what makes it frightening.
The Quran gives the clearest case. The sea closed over Pharaoh. Only then did he say: 'I believe there is no god but the One the Children of Israel believe in' (10:90). The answer came: 'Now? When you disobeyed before?' (10:91). One commentary links this ayah to Musa's prayer against Pharaoh. Its closing words match ours almost exactly: 'so they do not believe until they see the painful punishment' (10:88).
The Prophet described the same moment for all humanity. Al-Bukhari records it. When the sun rises from the west and people see it, they will all believe. 'That is when its faith will not benefit a soul that had not believed before' (6:158).
A sceptic asks: why refuse a belief that is finally sincere? Picture a family by a river. For years the insurers write to them about flood cover. They put it off. Then the river rises and an official warning is issued. They phone every insurer that night. None will sell. Cover bought after the water arrives is not insurance. It is a claim.
Faith is like that. Its whole worth lies in trusting what is not yet seen (2:3). Belief in what is already in front of you is simply eyesight. Everyone has it at the end.
So the question is not whether we will believe. Everyone will, one day. The question is whether we believe while it still counts, while it still costs us something to do it.
