Ash-Shu'ara · Makki · ayah 208 of 227
Ash-Shu'ara 26:208
وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ
“And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners”
Saheeh International
Essence
The One who could end any town in an instant never did so without first sending people to warn it.
A reflection
The power that knocks before it enters
Ahlaknā, "We destroyed": the speaker is the One who holds every town in His grip. Nothing could resist Him. No wall, army or alliance could delay Him by a breath. Yet the ayah ties His power to a rule He set for Himself. Not one town was ruined until warners had come to it.
Set that beside the way people use power. A junior housing officer has authority over one block of flats. A tenant falls behind on rent. Without a single letter or knock on the door, he has the locks changed while she is at work. She comes home with her shopping to find her life on the pavement. His power is tiny and borrowed. He used it without warning, because he could.
The contrast should shrink the ego. Most of us hold a sliver of power somewhere: over children, staff, a tenant, a younger sibling, a customer on the phone. And most of us, at some point, have used it before saying a word. We cancel, punish, cut off or withdraw, and explain later, if at all.
The King of all kings, who owes no one an explanation, chose the opposite. He sent warner after warner, often for generations, before any town fell. One commentator describes it as His justice in His creation: He destroyed no community except after excusing Himself to them and warning them.
Someone may object that this sounds like a ruler seeking approval, as if God needed us to agree that He was fair. The ayah suggests the reverse. A ruler who needs approval explains himself to protect his image. Allah's warnings protected them. They were a reminder, the next ayah says, pointing to what would save them. He gained nothing from sending them. They had everything to gain from listening.
Humility, then, is not only bowing before His power. It is learning from how He uses it. If the One who needs no permission still knocks before He enters, the rest of us have no excuse for barging in.
