Ash-Shu'ara 26:209
ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ
“As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Every warning was a reminder meant to save, and injustice is simply not His way.
A reflection
One short clause, and no need to say more
The ayah could have said "We do not wrong them". It says wa mā kunnā ẓālimīn: "We have never been ones who wrong." One commentator notes the difference. The chosen form denies that injustice is ever His way or His nature at all. It is not that He refrained this time. It is that wrongdoing has no place in Him.
The same commentator spells out what that covers. It is not His way to do anything that would count as injustice if anyone else did it. He does not destroy a people before warning them. He does not punish anyone who did no wrong.
Now watch how people defend their fairness. A department manager senses criticism building in his team. He starts copying himself into every email and keeping files on every decision. He opens each meeting by explaining why last week's call was reasonable. He spends more energy proving he is fair than being fair. The more he justifies himself, the less anyone believes him.
Allah's statement is the opposite. It is one short clause, placed calmly at the end of a sentence. No list of defences follows. It does not need one, because the facts have already been laid out: the warners, the reminders, the patient years.
This should humble us. Our egos are constantly at work in our own defence. We rehearse arguments in the shower. We replay old disputes to prove we were right. We need others to agree that we were fair. The One who is truly just has no such need. He states it once, and lets the record speak.
A sceptic might ask whether this is might making right: a powerful God simply declaring Himself just. But might-makes-right rulers never bind themselves to rules. Here the claim comes with its conditions, open to inspection. Warning first. Only the wrongdoers punished. Any reader can check the stories of this surah against those conditions, and every one of them holds.
