Ash-Shu'ara 26:52

۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِىٓ إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ

“And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."”

Essence

While Pharaoh watched every city, Allah's decisive word reached Musa unheard: lead My servants out by night, and know the old master will follow.

A reflection

A word no informer could overhear

The ayah opens with three words: wa-awḥaynā ilā Mūsā, and We revealed to Musa.

The root of waḥy pictures a particular kind of message. The lexicons describe it as putting knowledge into another, often in secret. It is a quick gesture, a nod, a word said so that others do not hear. The same word meant speed: al-waḥā al-waḥā, hurry, hurry. It also meant writing cut into rock that lasts for ages. Swift, hidden and lasting, all at once.

Now set that beside Pharaoh's Egypt. Here is a man who could summon every skilled magician from every city. In the next ayah he sends heralds through all of them in a single morning. His was a state that watched. Yet the one instruction that decided everything passed between Allah and Musa, and no informer heard it.

Picture a theatre on opening night. A thousand people sit in the dark, watching every move on the stage. Above them, a stage manager says one word into a headset. Only one actor hears it, and he steps into the light at exactly the right moment. The audience thinks it is watching the whole play. It is watching only what it is shown.

This is where the ego shrinks. Pride trusts what it can see and control. Pharaoh had the widest view in his world, and it was still the view of a man in the audience. The plan of his own downfall was spoken under his nose.

Someone may ask why Allah speaks of Himself as 'We', and whether such language reaches for grandeur. In Arabic this plural is how a sovereign speaks of his own acts. Here it is simply accurate. One commentator says the whole escape was arranged by Allah, so that Israel would go ahead and Pharaoh's army follow. Describing what He alone is doing is not a request for applause. His 'We' tells the reader where the real decisions are made.

The humble take comfort in that. Whatever room you are in, the decisive word may already have been spoken somewhere you cannot hear.
