An-Naml 27:23

إِنِّى وَجَدتُّ ٱمْرَأَةً تَمْلِكُهُمْ وَأُوتِيَتْ مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَلَهَا عَرْشٌ عَظِيمٌ

“Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The hoopoe reports the full truth to his king: a woman ruling a people, given everything a kingdom needs, seated on a great throne.

A reflection

Calling the rival's throne great, to the king's face

The hoopoe is standing before Sulayman, the most powerful king of his age. He is under threat of punishment. Flattery would be the safest move. Instead he describes another ruler and says: she has a great throne.

The commentaries felt the boldness of this. A rhetorical commentary asks how the bird could call her throne great, having seen Sulayman's kingdom. It offers two answers. Perhaps he judged it great for a ruler of her standing. Or perhaps Sulayman simply had nothing like it. A provincial governor, it notes, may own a thing the sovereign above him does not.

The same commentary records an embarrassing attempt to rescue the king's pride. Some popular storytellers paused their recitation after ʿarsh, "throne". Then they joined ʿaẓīm, "great", to the next ayah, as if the hoopoe meant "a great matter: I found them bowing to the sun". The commentary is scathing. Fleeing the bird's praise of her throne, they fell into something truly great: twisting the Book of Allah. A later commentator agrees that the pause is wrong.

Picture a market analyst in a board meeting. The founder has just called a rival's new app "a toy". She waits a moment, then slides her phone across the table. "Try it," she says. "It is faster than ours, and their onboarding takes forty seconds." The room goes quiet. The founder tries it. The next quarter's plan changes that afternoon.

A leader surrounded by people who shrink every rival is being slowly blinded. The hoopoe gave Sulayman the full size of what he had found. Nothing was cut down to please, and nothing inflated to impress. Sulayman did not punish him for it.

If you report to anyone, a manager, a parent, a committee, give them the true size of things. Even when the truth makes someone else look great.
