An-Naml 27:38

قَالَ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ أَيُّكُمْ يَأْتِينِى بِعَرْشِهَا قَبْلَ أَن يَأْتُونِى مُسْلِمِينَ

“[Solomon] said, "O assembly [of jinn], which of you will bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

Sulayman asks his council who will bring the queen's throne before her people arrive yielding: one chair carried, where an army had been threatened.

A reflection

The army he threatened never marched

A bailiff arrives at a flat with a court order and a locksmith waiting in the van. He could have the door off in a minute. Instead he knocks, shows the tenant the paperwork on his phone, and waits. By evening the man has packed. Nothing was broken.

One ayah earlier, Sulayman had sent the queen's envoy home with a warning. Armies she could not withstand would come (27:37). Then the queen chose to travel to him instead of fighting. The threatened army never marched. What moved, in the end, was one piece of furniture.

Ayyukum yaʾtīnī bi-ʿarshihā: which of you will bring me her throne? The commentaries give several reasons for the request. The one a great early commentator judged most likely is this. It was meant as a proof of his prophethood and of Allah's power. She had left it, the reports say, behind seven locked doors, under guard. To find it waiting for her in another land would say more than any army.

The details of the seven rooms are reports, and should be held as such. The text itself is plain enough. A ruler able to command jinn and men chose the smallest move that would make the truth undeniable.

That is strategy at its most humane. Force wins a surrender. A sign can win a mind. The first leaves resentment buried in the defeated. The second leaves nothing to resent, because the other side reaches the conclusion for themselves.

Most of us hold some small power: over a child, a tenant, a junior colleague, a rival in an argument. And most of us reach for the heaviest tool first. A raised voice, a formal complaint, a hint of what we could do if pushed.

Before your next confrontation, ask Sulayman's question in your own terms. What is the smallest thing that would make the truth plain? Bring that, and leave the army at home.
