Al-Qasas 28:27

“He said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allāh wills, from among the righteous."”

Essence

An old man offers a penniless stranger marriage for eight years' work, leaves two more to his generosity, and promises not to break him.

A reflection

Not only a worker: a son-in-law

His daughter had said: hire him. The father heard her, and went further. He did not only offer Musa work. He offered him a place in the family.

One classical commentary reads the ayah as two wishes spoken together. The old man wanted a shepherd for his flock, and he wanted a husband for his daughter. He named both in one sentence, and tied them to each other. A hired hand can leave at the end of any season. A son-in-law has a stake in the household he serves.

Think about the position he was in. He was a very old man, as his daughters had told Musa at the well (28:23). The young women had been doing the watering themselves, holding back from the crowd. Now a strong, trustworthy man had appeared. Paying him well would keep him for a while. Making him family would bind his future to theirs.

Picture a boatyard owner nearing retirement. His best young welder is being courted by a bigger yard across the estuary. He could match their offer, and keep him a year or two. Instead he sits him down and offers a share of the yard. The young man stays twenty years. He is not working for the yard now; he is working on his own.

That is a strategy as old as this house in Madyan. The people who give the most are rarely the ones you pay the most. They are the ones who feel the place is partly theirs. Wages buy hours. Belonging buys care.

The father also made sure the arrangement was honest. The work had a term. Nothing was hidden. The marriage was not a trap to keep a good worker; it was a door he could walk through freely.

If you lead anything, ask who among your best people is merely employed, and who feels they belong. Then ask what stake you could honestly offer the first, so that they become the second.
