An-Nisa 4:41

فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةٍۭ بِشَهِيدٍ وَجِئْنَا بِكَ عَلَىٰ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ شَهِيدًا

“So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and We bring you, [O Muḥammad], against these [people] as a witness?”

Saheeh International

Essence

On the Day, every people's prophet stands as witness, and the Prophet ﷺ over them all; when he heard this ayah recited, he wept.

A reflection

Why the All-Knowing calls witnesses

'How will it be, when We bring from every nation a witness?' The verb is in the royal plural: We bring. Every people that ever lived, each with its witness, gathered by One command.

Allah needs no witnesses. The ayah before said He wrongs no one by a speck of dust. He already knows every deed. So why the hearing?

One classical commentary answers. Judgement proceeds through the testimony of the messengers, whom Allah made His proof over creation. So the case against the wrongdoer is complete, his rebuke the heavier, his regret the deeper. And the joy of those who listened to the messengers is the greater.

Picture a school exclusion panel. The governors have read the head's report twice and can guess how it will end. Still, they ask the fifteen-year-old to speak, and hear him out. Afterwards his mother says in the car park: well, at least he was heard. That sentence is the point of the hearing.

This is where the ego shrinks. People often act as if no one will ever give evidence. The colleague who saw. The child who was listening. The messenger who told you plainly. The ayah says they will all be brought, by the One who could have simply decided.

Does Allah need to describe His court to us? He needs nothing. The description is mercy in advance. It tells us the witnesses' names while there is still time to give them something else to say.
