Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 10 of 69
Al-'Ankabut 29:10
“And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?”

Essence
Some borrow the believers' 'we' until harm comes, weigh people's pressure like Allah's punishment, then reclaim the 'we' at victory.
A reflection
He knows the chest better than its owner
The ayah ends with a question that needs no answer. A-wa-laysa Allāhu bi-aʿlama bi-mā fī ṣudūri al-ʿālamīn: is Allah not most knowing of what is in the chests of all the worlds?
Notice the scale. Not the chests of these few people, but of al-ʿālamīn: every creature in every world. Every hidden motive in every heart, all at once. One commentary says it plainly: Allah knows what is in their chests better than they know it themselves.
The Word Dictionary pictures ṣadr as the chest: the broad front of the body, the first part it turns towards the world. That front is exactly where we arrange our best face. The ayah says the inside of that front lies open to Him.
A man is made redundant. That evening he posts online that he is stepping away to spend more time with his family. A hundred former colleagues like it. By bedtime he half believes it himself. Most of us do something like this daily. We curate the self we show, then slowly start living inside the curation.
The ego feeds on that arrangement. It needs an audience it can manage. This ayah takes the one audience that matters out of reach of any managing. There is One who sees past the story to the reason the story was told.
Someone might ask why Allah needs to say this at all. Is announcing one's own knowledge not a kind of self-praise? But the sentence is not for His sake. He gains nothing from being acknowledged. It is for ours. It ends the exhausting performance. The one who says 'we believe' with a divided heart is exposed by it. And the one who struggles honestly, without the words to explain himself, is fully known too. He does not have to perform. He is already seen.
