Al-'Ankabut 29:11

وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

“And Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Twice, with the force of an oath, Allah says He will make known who truly believes and who only wears belief's words.

A reflection

Two oaths, and nobody sorts themselves

The ayah is two short sentences, each sealed the same way. Wa-la-yaʿlamanna, and He will surely know, and again, wa-la-yaʿlamanna. One concise commentary names the opening la- in both verbs as the particle of an oath. The doubled -nna at the end adds its own weight. This is Allah speaking with the full force of a sworn promise.

Notice who does the sorting. Not the believers, not the community, not the person himself. Allah.

That should unsettle the ego. Most of us quietly assume which list we are on. A commuter has watched dozens of clips of bystanders doing nothing while someone is harassed. Each time he has said: I would have stepped in. One night, on the last train home, a drunk man starts on a young woman two seats away. And his legs do not move. He had sorted himself years ago, into the brave list, without ever being tested.

The ayah does not let us file ourselves. Our self-image, our reputation and our history of good intentions are not the register. Allah's knowledge is.

Someone may ask why Allah would swear at all. He needs no one to believe Him, and He has nothing to prove. But an oath is a gift to the listener. These ayat were first heard by believers being harmed, and by hangers-on who drifted in and out. To the first, the double oath says: what you are going through is seen, and it will count. To the second, it says: the costume will not last. The emphasis is for us, so that we may stand on certainty while we wait.
