Al-'Ankabut · Makki · ayah 2 of 69

Al-'Ankabut 29:2

أَحَسِبَ ٱلنَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوٓا۟ أَن يَقُولُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ

“Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Saying 'we believe' is a claim, and Allah does not leave a claim untested, because to be left untested would be to be left alone.

A reflection

The opposite of being tested is being left

Most of us carry this ayah as a warning. Brace yourself. Believers have a hard life. If you sign up, expect to suffer. We hear it the way we hear a health notice on a packet: true, grim, and best not dwelt on.

Look again at the verb the ayah actually chose. Not 'did they think they would be spared', but an yutrakū: did they think they would be left?

The lexicons give this root a sharp picture. An ostrich egg lying bare in the open desert was called tarīka, a left thing. The bird has walked away from it and will not come back. The same word named a patch of grazing that everyone passes by and no one tends. To be left, in this language, is to be abandoned in the open.

So the question turns over in your hands. The alternative to being tested is not a comfortable life. It is being that egg. Unwatched, unattended, of no further interest to anyone.

Think of a mother who has nagged her fifteen-year-old about homework for three years. Every evening, the same questions. Then one week she stops. She does not ask, does not check, does not sigh. At first he is relieved. By Friday he is uneasy. Her silence frightens him more than any lecture did. He knows what it means when someone stops correcting you.

Now hear the ayah as its first listeners heard it. They were not comfortable people being warned. They were people already being beaten, and wondering whether Allah had left them. The commentators say it came down to console them. Its message, read this way, is the reverse of a threat. What is happening to you is not abandonment. Abandonment would look like being left alone.

So when hardship comes after you have said 'we believe', the first thing to say is not 'why me'. It is quieter than that. I have not been left in the open. Someone is still attending to me.
