Al-'Ankabut 29:52

“Say, "Sufficient is Allāh between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allāh - it is those who are the losers."”

Essence

Rejected, the Prophet ﷺ rests his case with Allah, who knows all in the heavens and earth; those who trust falsehood are the losers.

A reflection

The witness whose knowledge holds the heavens

Every argument wants a referee. When two people disagree for long enough, each starts looking for someone to say, publicly, you were right. The Prophet ﷺ had warned, recited and been called a liar. Then he was told: Say, Allah is enough as a witness between me and you.

Notice what comes next. Before any word of judgement comes yaʿlamu mā fī al-samāwāti wa al-arḍ: He knows what is in the heavens and the earth. One classical writer saw a pattern here. Allah mentions His knowledge when He speaks of His witnessing. A testimony resting on complete knowledge is the most truthful and the most just there could be. Human witnesses see part of a scene. This Witness holds every part of every scene.

Now hold your own quarrels against that scale. Picture two brothers at a stonemason's counter. Their father died in the spring. One wants 'beloved husband and father' on the headstone; the other wants a line of Quran. Each believes the other is disrespecting their father. They have not spoken in three weeks. Each rehearses his case at night, imagining the relatives taking his side.

Set beside 'what is in the heavens and the earth', the dispute is very small. That is humbling, and it should be. Our pride makes every disagreement feel cosmic, and the ego wants a crowd to declare that we won. Yet the same phrase carries something tender. The One who knows the heavens also knows this counter, these two men, and what each of them truly meant.

That is what 'enough' means here. You do not need the relatives' verdict. You do not need the last word. The case already sits before a Witness who missed nothing. You can say what is true once, and leave it there.

Allah gains nothing by being named as witness. He is not waiting for our acknowledgement. Naming Him is for us. It lifts the need to be vindicated from shoulders that were never built to carry it.
