Saba 34:24
“Say, "Who provides for you from the heavens and the earth?" Say, "Allāh. And indeed, we or you are either upon guidance or in clear error."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Name the One who sends provision from sky and soil; then the gentle fork follows: one side is guided, one is lost.
A reflection
The answer we would rather not say
The ayah asks a question and then does something unusual. It tells the Prophet ﷺ to answer it himself. 'Say: who provides for you from the heavens and the earth? Say: Allah.'
One commentator offers a reason that cuts close. In hardship, people readily admit that only Allah removes harm. The ayah before even shows them saying 'the truth' at such a moment. But in comfort they grow heedless of who sends the good. So here, where the subject is provision, the answer has to be supplied for them.
Picture a tenant in a shared flat on a freezing night. The boiler breaks. He messages the landlord, who drives over at eleven and has it fixed by midnight. Next morning a housemate asks in the group chat what happened. The tenant writes: 'Heating just came back on.' He knows exactly who came. But naming him would mean saying thank you, and admitting that he owes someone.
That is the ego's quiet trick with provision. We speak of the salary 'coming in', the harvest 'doing well' and the rain 'arriving'. These are sentences with no giver in them. They are comfortable precisely because they ask nothing of us. The pride that wants to be self-made prefers them.
A fair objection follows. Does Allah need to hear His name in our sentences? He does not. Nothing is added to Him when we say it. But something is added to us. The one who names the Giver becomes grateful, and gratitude reshapes a life.
So put the Giver back into your sentences. Not 'the money came through', but 'Allah provided'. Say it aloud, especially when it would be easier to leave Him out.
