Essence
Three letters no scholar can unlock open a surah that will one day plead for whoever kept it company.
A reflection
A reference written by the surah itself
A retired landlady sits down to write a reference for the man who rented her top flat for twelve years. She does not mention his degree or his charm. She writes what she saw. Rent on the first of every month. Bins out on Sunday nights. The winter he cleared the ice from her path before she was up.
This surah writes references too. Sahih Muslim reports from Abū Umāma that the Prophet ﷺ said: recite the two bright ones, al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān. On the Day of Resurrection they will come like two clouds, or two canopies, or two flocks of birds. They will plead for their companions.
Another report in Sahih Muslim, from al-Nawwās ibn Samʿān, adds a detail that is easy to miss. The Quran will be brought with its people, 'those who used to act on it'. Al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān will go ahead of them. The Prophet ﷺ gave three pictures, and the narrator said he never forgot them. Two clouds; two dark canopies with light between them; two flocks of birds in ranks. They will argue for their companion.
Ṣāḥib, companion, is a word for someone who keeps company. Not the person with a beautiful copy on a high shelf. Not the one who heard it once at a wedding. The one who lived alongside it, came back to it, and did what it said.
So these three letters are the doorway to a surah that intends to speak for you one day. The question is what it will be able to say. The landlady could only vouch for what she saw. The surah can only plead for the company it was kept.
Begin as a good tenant begins: with the first month paid on time. A few ayat a day, read slowly and acted on, is how a reference starts.
