ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ

Essence
Everything you lean on stands because something holds it up; only One stands by Himself and holds up everything else.
A reflection
The man on the ladder who needs no one
A man of eighty-two insists on clearing his own gutters. He has never needed anyone, he says, and he is not starting now. So he climbs. At the bottom, his daughter grips the ladder with both hands and says nothing. The ladder stands because she does.
That is the human condition in one picture. We feel self-standing. We are always being held.
Al-Qayyūm names the One who is not. A modern concise commentary gives both halves of the word. He stands by Himself, free of need of all His creation. And by Him every created thing stands, never free of Him in any state. The Arabs said of the man who ran a town's affairs that he was qāʾim over its business. Qayyūm is a stronger form of the same word. He runs the affairs of everything: its provision, its keeping, its defence, every change in it.
Now look at what we call our achievements. The heart that kept time through your exam was not yours to start. The memory you passed the interview with could fail tomorrow. Your income rests on a market, an employer, a body that still works. 'Self-made' is a title only One can wear. When a creature claims it, that is pride: forgetting the hands at the bottom of the ladder.
Someone may object: why does God announce that He alone is god? Is it insecurity, a need to be acknowledged? The ayah itself answers. A being who needs something is not al-Qayyūm. He is free of need of the worlds, and whoever strives, strives for himself (29:6). 'O people, you are the poor ones in need of Allah' (35:15). The statement adds nothing to Him. It tells you where the ground is.
There is relief in it, not only humbling. You were never meant to stand by yourself. Neither was the man on the ladder. Let someone hold it. Then remember who is holding them.
