Ali 'Imran 3:105
“And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment”
Saheeh International
Essence
Do not be like those who broke into parties and differed after the proofs had already made the matter plain to them.
A reflection
The proof arrived and the singing stopped
A village has sung the same carol for a century. Four families each hold, warmly and with evidence of a kind, that it was their own grandmother who wrote it. The claim is told at weddings. Everyone enjoys it.
Then a researcher finds the printed original, with a composer's name and a date. Within two years the carol is not sung at all.
The ayah says something that most of us would have predicted the other way round. They split after the clear proofs came to them. Not before. The proof did not settle the quarrel; it started one.
And there is a reason for that, and the lexicons supply it. Ikhtilāf, the word used here for differing, carries a specific action: each party pushes the other's view aside and puts its own in its place. It is not the holding of a different opinion. It is substitution.
While a matter is vague, nobody has to be wrong. Each family can keep its grandmother. The moment the thing is plain, somebody is wrong in public, and that is a cost people will pay a great deal to avoid.
So clarity does not automatically produce agreement. It produces a stake. What people do with the stake is the whole test, and the ayah puts it on us rather than on the evidence.
The concise commentaries are careful about what sort of differing this is. They describe people who became parties and factions, and differed over the foundations of their religion after the truth had been made clear.
Which is worth knowing, because that is the pattern, not the exception. Communities rarely split over what nobody knows. They split over what has just been established, because establishment creates winners.
So watch yourself in the hour after a matter becomes plain. That is the dangerous hour, not the years of uncertainty before it. Ask what the finding requires you to do, and refuse to ask who it makes smaller.
