Ali 'Imran 3:104

“And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong,[143] and those will be the successful.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Let there be among you a standing group calling to good, urging what hearts recognise and forbidding what they recoil from.

A reflection

Good is the thing you already recognise

A trainee perfumer spends two years learning to name materials by smell alone. There are hundreds of them. The surprising part, every trainee says, is that it feels less like learning and more like remembering. You have met this smell. You could not say where.

The ayah does not say enjoin the commanded and forbid the prohibited. It says maʿrūf and munkar, and those two words are not legal words. They are words about recognition.

The lexicons are clear, and this much is established. Maʿrūf is from knowing by signs and traces. The ʿurf is a horse's mane, hair lying after hair. A pleasant scent is ʿarf, because the soul settles into it. To have ʿarafa a thing is to be at ease with it. So al-maʿrūf is the good that sound hearts recognise and come to rest in.

Munkar is defined by the lexicons as its exact opposite. Something arrives at the heart that the heart cannot picture. It has no room for it, so it will not settle, and the tongue will not acknowledge it. The same root gives tanakkur: a change from a state that pleases into one that is disliked.

Now hear the common objection honestly. Who gave you the right to tell me how to live? It is a fair question, and most of the answers given to it are bad.

But look at what the vocabulary of the ayah actually licenses. You are not authorised to install a foreign code in another person's life. You are asked to name what they already recognise. Every human being knows that a promise kept is better than a promise broken.

And there is a sharper warning in the pairing. A society does not go bad by inventing new evils. It goes bad when the known stops being recognised, and the strange stops being strange. You can watch that happen in a workplace over four months.

Which means the work is less like arguing and more like the perfumer's exam. Naming, out loud, a thing everyone in the room has already met.
