Ali 'Imran 3:127
لِيَقْطَعَ طَرَفًا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَوْ يَكْبِتَهُمْ فَيَنقَلِبُوا۟ خَآئِبِينَ
“That He might cut down a section of the disbelievers or suppress them so that they turn back disappointed.”

Essence
The help given at Badr had named purposes: to cut away an edge of the deniers, or send them home humbled, with their hope snapped.
A reflection
Your great day was a clause in His sentence
A man gave four years of his working life to a road scheme. Surveys, objections, a winter of night work, two hearings he prepared for alone. When the published county history came out he bought a copy. The scheme has half a sentence, inside a chapter about the closing of the railway. He read it three times to be sure.
Now look at how this ayah is built. It does not begin with a subject. It begins with the letter of purpose: in order that He may cut off. The commentaries differ over which earlier statement it hangs from. Some attach it to the victory He gave at Badr. Others attach it to the line just before: victory comes only from Allah. Either way, the grammar does the same thing. Badr arrives in the text as a purpose clause under His intention, and the acting verb is His.
Hold the scale of that for a moment. The sources describe just over three hundred men. They took turns riding the camels they used for drawing water, and had one horse between them. Facing them were around a thousand fighters with a hundred horses. Nobody reading the start of that day would bet on them.
Then the commentaries add the thing that empties the chest of pride. He did not need the battle at all. One classical reading sets this passage beside His words about fighting. Had He willed, He would have taken retribution Himself. But He tests some people by means of others (47:4). The swords were not load-bearing.
This is where the ego goes quiet. We narrate our lives as the main story and fit Allah in as a helper who turns up when called. The ayah reverses the sentence. Your hardest-won result, the thing you will still be telling people about in thirty years, sits inside His purpose as a clause.
That is not a demotion. Half a sentence in His book outlasts a chapter in anyone else's.
