Ali 'Imran 3:128
“Not for you, [O Muḥammad, but for Allāh], is the decision whether He should [cut them down] or forgive them or punish them, for indeed, they are wrongdoers.”
Saheeh International
Essence
At the worst hour of his life the Messenger is told that the verdict on his enemies was never his to pass.
A reflection
The man with the best case is told no
A mother can usually name the friend. She knows the number, the evenings, which turn in her son's face came after which summer. She has the whole file and none of the power. She can feed him, drive him, pray for him, keep the door unlocked. She cannot choose for him. Finding that out is one of the quieter griefs of a life.
Now take the hardest version of it. A man stands on a hillside with a tooth broken and his head laid open. His uncle's body has been mutilated. He wipes the blood from his face and asks aloud how a people can prosper. They have split their prophet's head while he is calling them to their Lord. Sahih Muslim preserves the words. The reports say he meant to pray against them. What came down was this ayah.
Not for you is any of the matter. One commentary puts it plainly: the matter, all of it, is Mine. The Quran says as much to him elsewhere. Your part is to deliver, and the reckoning is Ours (13:40). Their guidance is not upon you (2:272). You do not guide whoever you love (28:56).
Sit with who is being addressed. Not a hot-headed follower in the ranks. The man with the best case any human being has held, in the worst hour he ever had. If the verdict was not in his hands, our pride has no shelf left to stand on.
And this is not Allah guarding a privilege He feels anxious about. He has no need of anyone's deference (35:15). One classical reading says the ayah is the opposite of a rebuke. It is guidance into the fullest form of servanthood, where nothing is said or done except by His leave.
The ego hears not yours as a demotion. It was the day the weight came off a man's back.
