Ali 'Imran 3:13

“Already there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met [in combat at Badr] - one fighting in the cause of Allāh and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight.[118] But Allāh supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that is a lesson for those of vision.”

Essence

A small band met an army three times its size; the sign is not only who won, but who decides what eyes see.

A reflection

Two horses and eight swords

The commentaries record the inventory. On one side, three hundred and thirteen men, most of them on foot. They had two horses, seventy camels to share, six coats of mail and eight swords. On the other side, about nine hundred and fifty fighters with a hundred horses, led by the nobility of Makka. The two groups met at the wells of Badr.

Any analyst would have called the result before it began. Bigger budget, better kit, more people: we all know how that ends. Most of our planning still runs on that arithmetic, and so does most of our pride. We take credit for winning because we were stronger, and we despair when we are weaker.

Then the ayah: wa-llāhu yuʾayyidu bi-naṣrihi man yashāʾ, Allah strengthens with His help whom He wills. The first hearers pictured naṣr as rain arriving on dry land, watering it until it grew. The streams that run in from far off and swell a valley's flood were called nawāṣir, helpers. Help, in this picture, comes from outside the valley.

This is not an argument against preparation. The same Quran commands it. It is an argument against the ego's arithmetic: the belief that the outcome belongs to whoever has more. One modern commentary draws the lesson plainly. Victory belongs to the people of faith even when they are few, and defeat to the people of falsehood even when they are many.

Why would Allah announce that victory is His to give? Not because He needs the credit. It keeps the winners humble and the outnumbered hopeful. Both are cured of the same illusion.

Whatever you are facing this week, count what you have honestly. Then remember who sends the streams from beyond the valley.
