Al-Jinn · Makki · ayah 24 of 28

Al-Jinn 72:24

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا

“[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The crowd counted heads and laughed at how few he had; one day they will see the real count, and learn who was truly few.

A reflection

The soldiers no one can count

The crowd that pressed around the Prophet ﷺ had one argument that seemed unanswerable. Look at us. Look at you. They were many; his followers could be counted on a few hands.

The ayah does not dispute the count. It disputes the counting. When they see what they were promised, they will know who was weaker in helpers and fewer in number. One early commentary names the comparison plainly: the soldiers of Allah, or those who set partners beside Him. Another says the deniers will turn out fewer than the soldiers of Allah.

And those soldiers have no published figure. 'None knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him' (74:31). Angels, winds, time itself, the turning of hearts. The crowd counted only the heads it could see.

We count the same way. Followers, subscribers, votes, market share, the size of the room that laughed at our joke. The ego reads every number as a verdict on its worth. Few people at my talk; I must be wrong. Thousands at theirs; they must be right.

This ayah breaks that arithmetic. Allah's side is never small, because He is on it. And He does not need the numbers. He is free of all need (35:15). He has no use for soldiers the way a general does. They are His creation, sent where He wills, out of His mercy to those He helps.

So the question is never how many stand with me. It is whether Allah is with what I stand for. Settle that, and the headcount loses its power to frighten you, or to flatter you.
